Webinar – Te hono a te ao Māori ki a Haina: Māori approaches to engagement with China past, present, and future
Tracing ancestral roots back to Asia, Tangata Māori have had a long and rich history of engagement with China and Chinese people. Since the 1860s in Aotearoa New Zealand this exchange of cultures has sometimes been complex, but over time has revealed a surprising range of shared world views, protocols and beliefs.
More recently these shared cultural approaches have anchored the involvement of Māori in a strengthened New Zealand-China relationship, in particular a mutual business focus on ‘the relational before transactional’ and long-term horizons. But it’s not just a commercial relationship – Māori also maintain active sports, arts, education, research and tech links with modern China as well.
The pioneering weavers linking te ao Māori and te ao Haina have made a lasting contribution to our bilateral relationship. How can young rangatahi be supported to continue and expand these links, to deliver benefit to their communities and economies?
Join the New Zealand China Council Te Kaunihera o Aotearoa me Haina online on 24 February for the launch of our new research report, Te hono a te ao Māori ki a Haina: Māori approaches to engagement with China past, present, future.
Hear from the report authors and other rangatira involved in the relationship, to understand this unique partnership and the future opportunities and prosperity it offers.
