Normal Service Resumed? Assessing future prospects for New Zealand-China services trade

Prior to COVID, services trade between New Zealand and China was growing as an important component of our overall trade relationship, comprising 17% of our total exports in 2019. China was long established as New Zealand’s largest source of international students and our second largest source of international tourists. The range of other services traded in both directions was also broadening.

As we continue to manage the fallout from the global pandemic, will trade in services again be an important part of overall bilateral trade with scope for future recovery and expansion? What are the barriers and challenges that will need to be overcome for services sectors to reach their full potential?

On 28 November, the New Zealand China Council will release a new report commissioned from Honey Consulting to take stock of ‘traditional’ service trade sectors, and to assess prospects to expand New Zealand’s services footprint in China in areas as diverse as e-commerce, fitness centres and software as a service. Will ‘weightless exports’ again become a strong pillar of the two-way trade relationship?
