NEW ZEALAND CHINA COUNCIL APPOINTS PATRICK ENGLISH AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The New Zealand China Council has appointed Patrick English as Executive Director. Mr English recently returned to New Zealand following a term as New Zealand Consul General and Trade Commissioner in Guangzhou, Southern China. Mr English will take up his new position with the New Zealand China Council Executive in January and be based in Auckland.

Announcing the appointment, New Zealand China Council Chairman, Sir Don McKinnon, said “Mr English will bring a wealth of experience working with both government and business on New Zealand China relations. The Council is delighted that he has agreed to take up this important role.” Sir Don McKinnon said New Zealand’s relationship with China was of critical importance and the establishment of the New Zealand China Council was intended to add real value. China is New Zealand’s second largest and fastest growing major trading partner.

Mr English’s initial focus will be on preparing for the inaugural New Zealand China Partnership Forum which will be held in Beijing in April. He will also work to expand networks in the New Zealand China community and with others engaged on China New Zealand matters within business, science, education, and other sectors.

A number of leaders from New Zealand’s business, education, scientific and cultural sectors are represented on the Council which works closely with the Government to achieve mutual goals under the New Zealand China Strategy.

Mr English’s has worked for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise for the past 17 years during which time he has served in New Zealand; Malaysia and Shanghai and Beijing as Trade Commissioner and Post Manager before his most recent role in Guangzhou. Mr English was part of the team that negotiated the New Zealand China Free Trade Agreement and oversaw the market implementation of the FTA following completion of negotiations. He also has experience in private sector management together with postgraduate qualifications in Chinese Studies and International Management. Patrick English will work out of the New Zealand Trade & Enterprise offices in Auckland until after the New Zealand Partnership Forum.
