NZCC MEDIA AWARD DOMINATES FRONTPAGE IN CHINESE HERALD

The headline in the Chinese Herald this morning reads “Media Award encourages NZ-China exchanges, Chinese Herald reporter awarded NZ China Media Award”.

Chinese Herald is a Chinese publication in alliance with the New Zealand Herald. It is widely popular among Chinese communities in New Zealand.

The article this morning congratulated all award winners, especially Ye Tao from the Chinese Herald. It also quoted NZCC chairman Sir Don Mckinnon, NZCC Executive Director Pat English, as well as Consul General Niu Qingbao, who attended the award evening.

Sir Don said in his speech that the establishment of this award is to encourage media in helping New Zealand public to learn more about China’s huge impact on New Zealand. The inaugural “New Zealand China Media Award” entries’ high standard reports and analysis impressed the organisers. He said: “the judges said the reports showed deep understanding of issues, and balanced views on China’s business, social and cultural context.”

Liam Dann said that the NZ Herald focuses more on the impact of Chinese development on NZ, rather than what we sold to China. He is looking forward to taking advantage of the award when he heads to China again.

Pat English told the Chinese Herald that NZCC organised this award to promote balanced, factual based, informative reporting on China, and to increase meaningful discussions. Media plays a crucial role in promoting the NZ-China relationship, but often faces challenges when it comes to reporting China. The award is established with the view to help overcome some of the challenges for journalists wish to reporting on China.
