NZ China Council member appointment – Professor Neil Quigley

July 11, 2022

The New Zealand China Council is pleased to welcome the University of Waikato and its Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley as a new member of the Council.

Prior to taking up his role at the University of Waikato in early 2015, New Zealander Professor Quigley held positions at Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He has extensive governance experience, and is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and former Chair of the Board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.  He was born and educated in New Zealand.

Welcoming Professor Quigley, Council Chair John McKinnon emphasised the importance of the New Zealand tertiary education sector’s engagement with China.  “International education plays a vital part in our relationship with China.  This is not only because the sector was New Zealand’s fourth largest export and China our largest source of international students before the onset of COVID-19, but because it fosters lifelong personal connections which are invaluable to both countries in years to come.”

“Research collaboration is another example of the value that education links can deliver”, said John McKinnon.

“Professor Quigley’s experience and expertise will be highly valued by the Council. We look forward to working with him alongside our other members to continue to support a resilient relationship with China.”

Former Vice-Chancellor of the Auckland University of Technology Professor Derek McCormack stepped down from the Council in early 2022.  John McKinnon thanked Professor McCormack for his valued support and engagement.
