Celebrating Icons of the New Zealand China Business Relationship

June 17, 2019

The New Zealand China Council proudly sponsored the ‘Outstanding Contribution to the New Zealand – China Business Relationship’ category at the 2019 HSBC NZCTA China Business Awards.

This was an opportunity for the Council to recognise and celebrate people and organisations who have made a lasting and positive difference to the business relationship, overcoming challenges and inspiring others through their work.

This year the field of finalists was strong, showcasing exceptional achievements in the creative sector, language, cultural exchange and diplomacy:

Auckland based Huhu Studios, pioneers of co-production between China and New Zealand in the field of animation was selected as a finalist for their long-term approach to business in China, their innovative work, and their overall patience and commitment to achieving their goals.

Te Papa Tongarewa / Museum of New Zealand made the finalist field for their efforts to drive exhibitions around the China-NZ Year of Tourism and Chinese New Year Celebrations, notably the popular Terracotta Warriors exhibition which drew huge crowds to Wellington.

Silvereye Communications was named a finalist for its work running New Zealand Chinese Language Week (NZCLW). The agency has put significant resources and effort into making NZCLW an established feature in New Zealand every year and bringing daily Mandarin to hundreds of thousands of Kiwis.

Auckland Mayor and former Trade Minister Phil Goff was chosen as a finalist for his concerted and continuous efforts to improve business relations with China, from the signing of the historic FTA in 2008 to his current and ongoing work growing economic, cultural and people-to-people connections.

Judges had a difficult time selecting a winner from a field of such talented candidates, with Phil Goff ultimately receiving the Outstanding Category award. The New Zealand China Council rightly applauds all category finalists for their determination, vision and achievements.
