The Belt and Road Initiative – What does China’s ‘project of the century’ mean for Central Otago?

The Belt and Road Initiative was announced in 2014 by Chinese President Xi Jinping. It is intended to promote closer ties between countries through development-led trade growth. This requires a massive infrastructure investment programme complemented by bilateral commitments covering trade and investment.

New Zealand and China signed a Memorandum of Arrangement in 2017 under which our countries are exploring ways of working together to expand trade and investment and develop a pathway for cooperation and exchanges to support the Belt and Road Initiative.
