Understanding China’s New Era

How are General Secretary Xi Jinping and his “Thought on Socialism With Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” changing the Communist Party of China? What are the implications for governance, the region and the world?

Join Rowan Callick, China Correspondent for The Australian, for an exploration of these questions and a discussion of the implications of Xi’s ascendancy for China’s governance, its economy and its global ambitions.

About the Speaker: Rowan Callick grew up in England, graduating with BA Honours from Exeter University. He worked for The Australian Financial Review for 20 years, including 4 years as China Correspondent, based in Hong Kong. In 2006, he joined The Australian as China Correspondent. After three years in Beijing, he became The Australian’s Asia-Pacific Editor and returned to Beijing as China Correspondent from March 2016 to April 2018. He has authored “Comrades & Capitalists: Hong Kong Since the Handover,” “Channar: A Landmark Venture In Iron Ore,” and “The Party Forever: Inside China’s Modern Elite.” All three have been published in both English and Chinese. Rowan Callick has won the Graham Perkin Award for Australian Journalist of the Year, and two Walkley Awards, for coverage of Hong Kong in 1997 and of China in 2007. In 2013, he was elected Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs.

This event is co-hosted by the New Zealand China Council and the North Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence. It will be held in both Wellington (15 May) and Auckland (16 May).
