Tony was New Zealand’s Ambassador to China from 2004 to 2009. He worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for 38 years before becoming Chairman of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre and the Victoria University of Wellington Confucius Institute.
Tony first served in China from 1976 to 1978 after undertaking Chinese language training in Hong Kong. Tony was Director of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei from 1994 to 1997, Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s North Asia Division for five years, and also served as Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He was recently appointed as a Senior Consultant to Hanban, the Confucius Institute Headquarters.
